From the ‘Veld: Africa on Foot in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is one of my low to mid-range budget favourites. This is possibly because of my nostalgia as it was the first private safari camp I visited! You’ll stay in simple chalets and kick off your mornings with a 3-hour walk – which is quite flat. It’s such a laid-back vibe, where you’re made to feel like family. Guides become your friends! Ellies often come to the pool, which is incredible. And I was blown away by the lion sightings in the area. Food was a delightful mix of homecooked fare, but not gourmet. The bar is well-stocked and for a small camp, it had some fantastic wines!
Located in the heart of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, Africa on Foot is the pioneer of the morning walking safari, while still offering the signature evening game drive synonymous with the Kruger safari experience. Best described as a comfortable camp, Africa on Foot is the charming camp ideal for adventurers and romantics. Sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park and revered Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, this Big 5 safari camp is certainly not short of wildlife sightings.
Camp Life:
Africa on Foot is a comfortable yet rustic camp, offering all the creature comforts of home. Chalets surround a central lounge, bar and dining area that flows into an enclosed boma. Adjacent to the bar is a small lounge/library area. You’ll find a small splash pool with a deck area, frequented by elephants during season. Just on the outskirts of camp, next to the treehouse, is the second swimming pool – ideal for adventurous romantics. There is Wi-Fi and credit card facilities available at camp, and plug points in the main area for charging.

Wildlife sightings: Africa on Foot is home to a mega-pride of lions, and has a history of remarkable lion sightings. Equally so, their leopard population is certainly noteworthy. This is a Big 5 reserve, so sightings of all the big creatures is possible. Additionally, you’ll discover clans of hyena, wild dogs, honey badgers, zebra, giraffe and an array of other mammals.
When it comes to birding, commonly spotted local specials include magpie shrike, lilac-breasted roller, yellow-billed hornbill, glossy starling, white-crowned shrike, blue waxbill, fork-tailed drongo, and Cape spurfowl. Rare raptors include black-chested snake eagle, Wahlberg’s eagle, and tawny eagle; while all species of vulture are prevalent in the region.
Unique selling point: There’s a lofty treehouse on site, just a few metres away from camp that can be booked in addition to your stay. Completely open, apart from canvas sides, the treehouse is appeals to the explorer within. Adjacent to the treehouse is a swimming pool.
Best for: Families with older children, outdoor enthusiasts, trekkers, adventurous romantics, and lovers of simple no-frills safaris. Think 3-star style Kruger camp with expert guiding and exceptional wildlife sightings.
